Month ago I got a phone call from Mark Zeltser who asked for help with his website. 5 years ago Mark opened a website called EveryNotewhich sell classical music sheets for piano, violin, guitar etc. The problem is that with over 20 000 music sheets in database and more than 50 000 pages Google indexed only 18 000.
Our analysis showed that many pages on EveryNote contained similar content, some content was taken from another websites (duplicate content), many pages located more than 10 clicks away from the homepage, similar metatags, and small amount of deep links. For Google and other search engines it was hard to reach most content pages. Moreover, many pages was filtered because of duplicate content issues.
We discussed our strategy and decided to:
- Rewrite most pages with duplicate content.
- Increase amount of internal links.
- Submit content pages to social sites like Digg, Mixx, Furl etc… creating more deep links.
In 2 weeks we did only some submissions in social networks, placed more internal links to other related pages, and fixed duplicate content on 10-15% of the pages which was affected. First week gave some improvements and Google indexed 20000 pages, this week Google indexed 25300 pages and it seems like amount of pages are growing.
Moreover, in past 2 weeks organic traffic from Google increased by 10.75%.
